The Modified Bavarian Formula
The legally binding mathematical algorithm prescribed by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and used by Uni-Assist, TU Munich, and RWTH Aachen.
The highest possible score in your degree grading scale (e.g., 10.0 in India, 4.0 in USA/Pakistan, or 100%).
The lowest score required to pass individual courses and graduate (e.g., 4.0 or 5.0 in India, 2.0 in USA, or 40%).
Your cumulative final Bachelor grade or CGPA as recorded on your official university transcript.
Why German Grades Are Inverted
Unlike the American or Indian systems where higher numerical scores indicate superiority, the German academic system operates on an inverted scale where 1.0 is the top distinction:
- 1.0 – 1.5 (Sehr Gut): Excellent / Top 5% performance.
- 1.6 – 2.5 (Gut): Good / Well above university standards.
- 2.6 – 3.0 (Befriedigend): Satisfactory / Average cohort level.
- 3.1 – 4.0 (Ausreichend): Sufficient / Bare minimum passing mark.

Admissions Pro-Tip: German universities prioritize your curricular compatibility (ECTS credit match in Mathematics, Theory, and Major subjects) alongside your Bavarian Formula grade. Having a 1.6 German Grade with deficient credits may lead to rejection, whereas a 2.3 with 100% credit match often receives direct admission.
Global Grading Scales vs German Academic Grades

GPA vs ECTS: Understanding the Crucial Difference
Many applicants mistakenly believe their GPA converts into ECTS credits. In European Higher Education, they measure two completely different dimensions:
- 1 ECTS = 25 to 30 study hours (lectures, labs, self-study, exams).
- 1 Academic Year = 60 ECTS (30 ECTS per semester).
- 3-Year Bachelor = 180 ECTS | 4-Year Bachelor = 240 ECTS.
- 2-Year Master = 120 ECTS.
Anabin Database & H+ University Status
Before applying the Bavarian Formula, German universities and Uni-Assist verify your degree awarding institution on the official Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) Anabin database:
Your university is fully recognized in Germany as an institution of higher education. Your Bachelor is eligible for direct Master’s admission.
Some specific programs or faculties are recognized while others are not. Case-by-case verification by Uni-Assist is mandatory.
The institution is not recognized as equivalent to a German university. Degrees cannot be converted for direct university entry.
