German Grade Scale &
Bavarian Formula Guide
The definitive international credential translation manual. Understand how German universities, Uni-Assist, and the Bavarian Formula evaluate foreign academic transcripts.
The German Academic Grading Scale (1.0 to 5.0)
Unlike Anglo-American or Asian systems where higher numerical scores (like 4.0 GPA or 100%) represent top performance, the German academic system is inverted: 1.0 is the highest possible grade, and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade.
Outstanding academic performance, well above average requirements. Guarantees top percentile standing for TU9 universities.
Performance significantly exceeding average standards. Highly competitive for German restricted admission (NC) Master programs.
Performance meeting standard academic requirements on average. Eligible for non-restricted (zulassungsfreie) degree courses.
Minimum passing standard despite evident flaws. Barely satisfies general academic qualification for university entry.
Performance does not meet basic standards. Deficient knowledge; course or degree not recognized for university entry.
The Modified Bavarian Formula (Modifizierte bayerische Formel)
The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) established this linear interpolation formula to uniformly normalize diverse international grading systems.
